The Legend of the Easter Robin: An Easter Story of Compassion and Faith is a children's book based on a Pennsylvania Dutch tale that explains how the robin's chest became red. It was the compassion that the robin showed during the time of Christ's crucifixion that earned him his beautiful bold color, the same color as the blood that fell from Christ's crown of thrones. The book explains the true, bloody meaning of Easter by interlacing a modern-day story of a little girl and her grandmother as they watch the robins from the kitchen window.
The story is based on sound biblical truth but it is not appropriate for children of all ages. The concepts of death, flogging, and even compassion are meant for an older child - probably eight years old and up. The book is beautifully written with charming and colorful illustrations which bring the story to life. The portions of the story that describe the crucifixion of Jesus are quite graphic and the illustrations change to black and white to mirror the more dramatic tone of the story.
If I had older children I would love using this book to supplement our spiritual teachings during the Easter Season. However, it will be several years before I'm able to sit down and share this with my children due to its dramatic tone, the length of the story, and the powerful illustrations - it is simply inappropriate for my 3-year-old and 7-month-old. If you are looking to introduce your children to the true Easter story this book will provide you with a great resource and I highly recommend it. There's even an extra page at the end of the book explaining some of the symbolism of the crown of thrones, the robin's red breast, and even Easter eggs.
